US Army Pursuit Interceptor

US Army Pursuit Interceptor
US Army Pursuit Interceptor

Description:

This is an old cigarette card from Wings cigarettes. These cards were included with the cigarettes and they are sometimes called tobacco cards. This is one of fifty modern airplanes as the set was called. It is a US Army Pursuit Interceptor. Technically this is a Bell Airacobra P39 Air Interceptor. It was equipped with a 12 cylinder Allison engine capable of extremely high altitudes. It was designed for combat situations. The engine was actually behind the pilot's seat and the propeller was shaft driven. The estimated speed of this aircraft was 400 mph but I don't think this have ever been confirmed.
