Seversky Amphibian Airplane

This is an old cigarette card from Wings cigarettes. These cards were included with the cigarettes and they are sometimes called tobacco cards. This is one of fifty modern airplanes as the set was called. It is a Seversky Amphibian. At the time this card was relaeased, the Seversky amphibious airplane held the world speed record for amphibious aircraft. This was an all-metal constructed, low-wing plane. The retractable landing gear would disappear into the floats, innovative in its time. Major Seversky designed it, piloted it, and set speed records with it. This seaplane was the only amphibian to ever complete the Thompson trophy race. This was apparently a notable achievement back then.
